About Disneyland
Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, in Anaheim, California as the world's first Disney theme park and the only one designed and built under Walt Disney's direct supervision. Having celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025, the park sits on roughly 100 acres within the larger 500-acre Disneyland Resort and welcomes approximately 17.3 million guests annually, making it consistently the second-most-visited theme park on earth. Over 830 million cumulative visits since opening make it the most-attended theme park in history.
The park is organised into nine themed lands, each with its own distinct visual identity and attraction roster. Main Street U.S.A. serves as the arrival corridor, running from the entrance gates to Sleeping Beauty Castle — the park's 77-foot visual anchor and navigational centerpiece.
Beyond the castle hub, lands fan out in a classic hub-and-spoke layout: Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Frontierland, and Bayou Country to the left; Tomorrowland to the right; and Fantasyland straight ahead through the castle, with Mickey's Toontown situated directly behind it. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge occupies the northwestern boundary, accessible via Frontierland, Bayou Country, and Fantasyland. The 2019 addition of Galaxy's Edge dramatically expanded the park, adding 14 acres and altering the flow of guest traffic in ways that longtime visitors still find surprising.
Major attractions include Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Indiana Jones Adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. The park features dozens of retail outlets across its lands, and contributes to the more than 160 food and beverage locations found across the entire Disneyland Resort.
The resort also encompasses Disney California Adventure Park, three hotels, and the Downtown Disney District, making the broader campus a meaningful wayfinding challenge for first-time visitors.
Why interactive wayfinding matters here
Disneyland's hub-and-spoke layout was revolutionary in 1955 and remains intuitive in principle, but the park has been adding land, attractions, and service points for 70 years, and Galaxy's Edge alone added 14 acres to a footprint that most visitors still mentally model from a decades-old version of the map. On a peak summer day with 47,000 guests in the park, knowing the fastest route between Rise of the Resistance and Tiana's Bayou Adventure is meaningfully different from a static park brochure.
