About Liverpool ONE
Liverpool ONE opened in October 2008, timed to coincide with Liverpool's designation as the European Capital of Culture. Spanning 42 acres (170,000 square metres) and drawing approximately 33 million visitors each year, it stands as one of the most significant urban regeneration projects Europe has seen, transforming the city's waterfront edge and returning Liverpool to the front rank of UK retail destinations.
Unlike a traditional enclosed shopping centre, Liverpool ONE is fully integrated into the surrounding city streets in an open-air layout. That design choice makes it distinctive, and easy to get lost in.
The complex is organised into four clearly differentiated districts:
- South John Street forms the commercial core, spanning two levels and anchoring the high street fashion and household-brand offer
- Peter's Lane sits alongside it as the premium and designer district, characterised by higher-end boutiques and stylish arcades
- The Terrace occupies the upper level and is given over entirely to dining, bars, and a multi-screen cinema
- Chavasse Park — a five-acre green space woven into the heart of the development — hosts seasonal events, pop-up activations, and the kind of outdoor programming that draws visitors back outside of a traditional retail mission: Curling in winter, River of Light installations, and more.
Before Liverpool ONE opened, Liverpool sat outside the UK's top-ten retail destinations. Its opening changed that, and the city has consistently ranked among the country's most popular shopping cities since. The mix of high street retail, premium brands, food and beverage, leisure, and a genuine public park creates a navigation challenge that no printed directory adequately solves.
Why interactive wayfinding matters here
An open-air complex spread across 42 acres doesn't come with the natural containment of a covered mall. There are no internal corridors to guide visitors back to a known reference point.
Districts shift in character, levels change, and seasonal installations appear and disappear throughout the year. A static directory board near the car park entrance solves one moment of one visitor's journey.
A live, searchable, interactive map accessible on a visitor's phone before they leave home solves the whole trip. That's the layer Mappedin provides: one source of truth that updates when a tenant moves, a new pop-up opens, or a seasonal event reconfigures Chavasse Park.
